Default Differential

About three weeks ago I replaced my differential. (Only the middle part where the gears go.) Today I was driving and my truck was over heating. I pulled over and added water. As I was taking off when I turned I heard a loud pop. I haven't done any off road at all. Any help would be appriciated.

If you don't notice any difference in the drivability of the vehicle then that noise could have been one of several things maybe not even related to the differential. Did you replace the parts yourself? You didn't state the year and model of the truck which is somewhat important. What's the status of ball joints? Axles, hubs, tie rod ends, driveshafts? A lot of things can "pop" if you haven't updated old parts and they are wearing out. Why is your vehicle losing coolant and overheating? I would be more concerned about that, which is saying a lot! Probably a much faster repair than driveline components and then you can check it off of the list and not be dealing with multiple issues at the same time. You have work to do but please give more info so that somebody can better help you

Did you replace the whole third?

I have a 2003 land rover discovery with 132k miles. I have 270/75r18 bf goodrich all terrain and a 2 inch coil spacer lifts. My tires seem sturdy and have no unusual wiggle movement. When I drive straight my truck is fine nothing unusual. It's when I turn my tires all the way and accelerate that I hear the loud popping noise.(either right or left). Three weeks ago I switched out the front gears in the differential. I literally took off the right and left cv axles and the front drive shaft to be able to take out the gears with the lid that was held up with about 12 bolts. I replaced it with a used one and drove fine. Didn't do any off roading and I never floor my truck. My truck over heated today because it is leaking little by little coolant from my head gaskets. I turned it off as soon as I saw my gauge going up. I filled it up with water turned it on and when I was driving off I made a sharp u turn and heard the lout popping/cracking noise.

There's a few guys on here that should know exactly what's going on. You didn't mention that you made a post not too long ago describing this same problem with the popping before you swapped your differential so I assume that you are still having the exact same problem. Do you hear the pop, or can you also feel it up through the steering wheel as well? Can you feel the truck move or tilt at all when it does this "pop?" Have you tested the ball joints on the front wheel assembly? There is a thread on this site and also a YouTube video that describes the process. If it's not the diff, steering or downstream driveline then possibly something with the differential mechanism in the transfer case no longer functioning correctly. I guess back to my question can you feel it coming from the front or just hearing it? I don't know anything about it but I'm hoping whatever info you can put out here will allow a real guru to make an informed decision as to what the fault can be

I can gear and feel it popping. Tomorrow I'm going to check the fluid on the differential to see if it has any peices of metal. If it does then it's my differential. But I want to know what is causing it to break. I'm also going to go to the guy that I bought it from and see what type of deal he can give since it's only been 3 weeks. Ball joints are fine and so are my ball bearings. And like I said I can go 75 mph and nothing will sound but when I turn my wheel all the way then that popping noise comes out!

Once you replace the head gaskets you need to install an aftermarket temp gauge if you are referring to temp gauge on the dash when you say "saw my gauge going up.". If that needle starts going up then your coolant temps are already at 240-250 degrees, which is catastrophic. It leaves you no room for error so don't refer to it. Damn bro I saw your posts related to this vehicle and she is not happy. Flooding it sure didn't help. Was it losing coolant when you bought it? Or have you neglected it and blew them yourself? Prob have bad radiator, pressure cap, thermostat and hoses that led to the head gasket problem. You may have to replace all of that when you do the gaskets. Technically it's totaled

I watch a lot of court TV and unless you have anything in writing, it's an "As-is" sale and there is no liability on the seller's behalf. It appears as though he unloaded a lemon on you and if so, will do nothing to rectify the issue. But I will hope the best for you. Bad things happen to good people. You will end up having to do all of these repairs yourself unless you have deep pockets. Turning your own wrenches and getting parts from scrap yards and enthusiasts on this site will save you the thousands necessary to fix it now before you blow the motor. What possessed you to drive it in 4 feet of water? I hope the PO isn't a member here!

I went mudding and my drive belt popped so my water pump and fan went off. I was going down hill so didn't notice that my belt popped. By that time it was already to late my truck was overheated
