Default disco 96 fuel consumption

Greetings all,
bought me 96 disco 12 months ago and did some sums [] just recently regarding the miles per gallon thing; it doesn't make good reading. I'm averaging 420 miles per tank (80 litres), which gives me 5.25 miles per litre or 24 mpg. Now, is this normal for a disco 2.5 tdi, I mostly drive around country lanes and roads, occasionally doing more than 90 miles in a trip, but mostly what you would call "around town" driving. I'd really like to hear of any consumption improvement tricks or tips, or bolt-on technologies, e.g. EkoTek, but for diesel engines.
Happy New Year to all!

my 90 200tdi does on average of between 28 to 30mpg, depending on the type of trip, long distance is better than town of course.
Now the 90 is lowered geared so would expect the disco to get the same if not slightly better.

It might be worth looking into changing the intercooler, and going for a larger one, this will give slightly more power but will also improve fuel consumption if you do not use the extra power..

Might also be worth asking the same question on landrovernet..

Thanks for that Lighting90, at the risk of asking a daft question, what does the intercooler do? Feel free to point me at the appropriate RTFM resource if it's a long answer! Would this intercooler respond to cleaning/servicing of some sort, before buying a new, larger one? Although I DO like the offer of increased power [sm=smiley20.gif].

The intercooler basically chiils the turbo, and thus keeps the air going into your engine cooler which increases compression and thus gives better combustion. Therefore the bigger the intercooler the colder the air and the better combustion.

Does it need cleaning, well, yes it does from time to time, as oil seeps out of the turbo and into the intercooler and thus needs flushing out. Easy to check as you remove the hoses and check for oil.

Other things to check are the injectors, if they are worn, then they will not be spraying finely enough.. these would have to be checked by someone with the right equipment though..
