Default Disco or Freelander?

I'm new here, don't have a truck yet but am considering getting one. I've done a lot of research, and detemined that either a Freelander or Discovery will do what I want. That being, I'm looking for a daily driver, that is also capable of some light off-road duties. I also don't want a me-too car, something that you see everyday. I love the "legend" of Land Rovers and the brand really appeals to me.

I'm looking at a 2005 Freelander, or a 2004 Discovery.

My questions is this: Which is more reliable? My impression is the Discovery is more reliable, is this true?

I'm a home mechanic, pretty much capable of doing anything. I even enjoy working on cars. But, what I don't want is expense. I've seen an alarming number of reports that the engine and trans on the Freelander just... let go. Not a leaking gasket or something "minor" like that, but they just go, and need full engine replacement costing $1000's.

Is this an accurate assessment?

Are Discoveries immune to this kind of massive mechanical failure?

Stick with an 04 Disco, far more capable, will hold it's value much longer and far out perform the Freelander off road.

Disco every time. Comparing a disco to a freelander is like comparing a steam hammer to a child's plastic mallet with a squeaker in it
