Default Discovery 2 Viscous Fan Coupling

Hi

Does anyone know how much silicon oil and what grade is needed to refurbish the viscous fan coupling on the D2. I had thought it was 250ml's of 10,000 CST but that from distant memory.

If it has leaked out enough fluid to need refill, it will most likely leak out new fluid quickly as seal is not going to repair itself. Here in the States the fan clutch from a 2000 Chevy Express van, 4.3 liter, without A/C, is the same size (6 inch), and rotation, and thread. You just have to use different fan to clutch bolts and enlarge hole slightly.

In a pinch, hydraulic jack oil, etc. Or drill thru clutch with two screws (it becomes a 100% coupling) and you can make it home from the desert. If just driving on highway, without stopping for drive thrus, just take fan off, it is not needed above 50 mph.

Buy a new clutch, refilling is not an option.

Thanks you guys,

I'll test it again both hot and cold and see what it performs like. It's not overheating at present but is slightly higher than normal over the past two months on the gauge (LR 'carp' gauge) which made me look at the viscous fan unit. I might also fit auxilary digital temperature and oil pressure gauges to be on the safe side now the truck is getting old with 120K miles on it.
