engine noise ?? Whats else to try
1995 Range Rover country LWB , 125k miles
developed a tick or clatter a week ago. Sounded like lifter noise , lifters were replaced. Noise still there. Possibly rockers or rocker shafts worn? Swapped rockers and shafts from a good running , quiet, '95 4.2. Noise still there. Start the engine cold , approx 10 - 15 mins the noise starts. Sometimes goes away, comes back, etc... Shut it off for 15 mins , start up same deal.
Thoughts? A bad lifter ? The inside of this engine is clean , clean , clean. The previous owner claims only synthetic, it looks like it.
Thanks to all!

I suffered the same problem. I was convinced it was a lifter. It turns out it was a cracked exaust manifold. When it was cold it leaked. When it warmed up (between 1-3 minutes) the expansion closed the crack and it quieted down. I replaced the mainifold and gasket....problem solved. This was the first time in my life that I fixed a bad lifter with an exaust manifold and gasket. ; )
