You have 2 choices, tear it all apart and maybe never find it, live with it or sell it.
They all have a little tick of one kind or another, you decide.
By the way, what weight oil are you using and how often do you change it?

Default OIL weight

Hi Mike. Well the ticking went away 2 years ago when I switched to Royal Purple W10-40 full synthetic. Then when my mechanic did the head gasket job he put in something else. He told me to come back and change the oil after 500 miles because he believes it should be done soon after the head gasket job which included changing the oil pump and all the plugs and wires and changing the ignition coil. I will put back the Royal Purple W10-40 at that oil change. At least now someone else will get the opportunity to listen. The ticking is loudest down very low. 2 years ago it seemed to come from up top but maybe I just didn't listen down low. Maybe I will get lucky and it will be just a leak in the exhaust (considering the low proximity) but I am not feeling too optimistic about that outcome right now. I am always throwing money at this car ($6000 in 2 years / 5000 miles) and a couple of years ago I got a hold of the service records from Land Rover and I was stunned to read how many times the previous owner had the car in the shop since new. I am the second owner. I just tell my wife that she should be happy that I did not buy a boat.

You may have a broken oil pump, it does happen while still pumping some pressure.

Hello,
I have just bought a 2002 discovery from a service manager at Landrover. He just replaced the oil pump, gasket, rebuilt the heads, new intake and head gaskets along with oil pump gasket. Truck runs great but I get a little tap at idle...once you give it a little gas it goes away. All the repairs were just complete. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Bob

Does the tap start when engine first cranks and is cold? Goes away when warmed up? Slipping liner. One theory is the slipping liner is tracking with the piston up/down; at higher rpm the liner can't go all the way to "tick" before piston reverses and starts the other way. Usually slipping liner starts after engine warms up.

Also, you oil pressure could be low. Not so low that the light comes on. Oil pump can be cracked. Mechanical oil gauge psi test. And read this thread from our tech area, install the new filter and Rotella. https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...estions-46975/
