Default Fuel Emissions Leaking?

Hi,

My check engine light has been on for ages. Upon reading it it informed me that the system used to contain the gasoline fumes within the vehicle (in the tank) is not working. This could mean that my filler cap is loose, but it's often on even when I tighten the cap up snug.

Regardless, it doesn't really bug me. What does worry me is that this is a fail when it comes time to get it emissions tested.

What are your thoughts on fixing this problem? I don't think the vehicle needs to get tested for some time. However, I'd rather be prepared.

Thanks,

John
