Default Gearbox fault, transmission?

Hi just some history customer brought vehicle complaining of transmission concern. Upon test drive on highway going 65 mpg vehicle lost acceleration still revs wont move also made grinding noises. Got it towed to the shop and has p0501 code. I let it sit came back to it the next day it moves foward and in reverse revs high and moves slow. Looking for suggestions. I'm draining fluid to check condition and level. Also has gearbox fault on dash. What else should I be checking?
