Default Head gasket?

I have an 02 disco 2 and it doesn't overheat or smoke, but it is LOUD! It sounds like a train and it sounds like the problem is coming from the left side(drivers side) and after driving a while, at a stop, it smokes a little from that area but out the side from under hood...it has 158800 miles and noise is worse when I push on the gas. I cansmell exhaust fumes pretty strong, too.....ideas?

Check the exhaust manifold as said above, but most of the time that is a blown head gasket that is pushing out externally. A leak down test is the way to know for sure unless you can feel the air push out from the head/block seam.

Unless engine kept clean may just be leaked oil accumulation heating up and smoking off from leaky manifold. May the RGs be with you.

Check the exhaust manifolds for loose nuts or broken studs, blown head gasket wont produce excessive exhaust fumes.
