Default Heater control issue...

I tried to search this issue but was unable to find anything. Maybe someone can help.

I just bought a '97 Discovery and the heater blower was working fine. After driving it about 20 miles I noticed that the blower motor wasn't running anymore. I tried everything with the controls and still nothing. Not in any fan position. A/C on or off it's still the same.

Has anyone else had this issue?

This is common, the fan switch gets dirty and needs to be cleaned.
Easy DIY, use electrical contact cleaner and spray behind the switch, then work the switch to all 5 positions repeatedly.
This makes it work again 95% of the time.
Make sure you use a cloth or something to keep the cleaner from dripping/spraying all over.

Thanks for the info. Is this something I need to remove the control panel from the dash? Or spray thru the slots while in the dash?

Thanks again...

Here's a page from the shop manual, the full download is in my signature, it is called the RAVE.

Remove the rotary *****, they just pull off, then remove the face, then you should see the switch guts.

I tried getting into the heater controls this evening with no luck. Looking at the manual, you need to remove the radio, clock, ashtray, ect... I cant get the clock and whatever it is above the ash tray out of the dash. Any suggestions?

Or am I just supposed to spray the contact cleaner thru the front next to the slide switch??

Sorry for beating this topic to death, but I'm freezing my *** off on my way to work in the mornings.

The repair manual is useless for most things, to many steps for the simplest task, they want you to unhook the battery when changing the oil!

No need to remove the stereo or clock, turn all of your heater control ***** to the far left, pull straight out on them, wiggle is needed, they will come off.

Then you will have the fake wood trim, it will come off, wiggle it, tickle it, whatever, it will come off.
There there will be 2? phillips head screws, remove those and the HVAC panel will fall out.

Don't know what page you looked at, but the one I sent says exactly what Spike says, pull off *****, two screws, it comes off, nothing about radio, ashtray, etc. Now a D2 will have all that, but not the D1....

Thanks again for all the help. I found the issue but think it may be bigger than I think. The fuse under the hood was melted into the fuse block. Not just blown but major melt down. I had to heat it up to get the pieces out.

Could this be a result of a much bigger issue?
