Default HELP abs troubles

I ve have recently purchased a 1996 landrover discovery and i just ran into my first problem. Im sure something in my abs is the problem but im not sure what. when i get on the brakes hard the pedal shakes violently and i hear a loud banging, if feels like the valve is opening and shutting at the wrong time, but i dont know what part to buy and replace. Also for that mater i have noticed a large span in prising on all land rover parts where is the best place to look.
thanks

Dave--

It's not that simple (noise= known part to replace). Do you have any warning lights on:? (on the dashboard)

Does the vehicle pull to one side when you get this noise and vibration?

when was the last time the vehicle had brake pads and rotors replaced?

Is there an unusual amount of dark brake dust on any one wheel?

Check out my Land Rover info and pricing at www.eurotekapg.com

Our prices are fair --- but I won't compete with those that are selling cheap Chinese clone parts (like a lot of the stuff you see on eBay). That explains your statement about price variations.

there no lights on the dash, and i know it is not a rotor or pad problem... although i thought about the calliper because it does tend to go a little left when braking. but the change in the foot pedal feels like anti lock...it is basicly ellimintating my control over the amount of pressureto keep me from locking up, but it is doing it way too early and i think that is the cause of the loud noises.... far as brake dust goes it seems fairly normal....im lost im not a huge fan of abs

Usually-- when the ABS engages at slow speeds or when going over rough road surfaces, it is because there is a false signal being sent to the ECU from one of the corners of the vehicle. Causes are:

A wheel speed sensor that is dislodged. Will sooner or later illuminate the ABS light when the frequency of occurance exceeds a software threshold value.

Brake dust that causes resonance when lightly applying the brakes --- and this in turn engages the ABS system

A worn hub bearing on a particular corner that allows the target-ring to sensor air gap to flucuate. But this usually stores a fault code in the computer and illuminates the ABS light.

The first two are easy to check out. The third requires the vehicle to be put on a lift ---all wheels pulled, and the free-play checked out.
