Hey guys,
I tried searching forever and found nothing.

I was driving my Disco a couple weeks ago and all of a sudden it died. I tried to start it and it would turn over but would not start. One of the relays in the engine bay fuse box was buzzing (the relay with the picture of an engine and a lightning bolt through it, I forget what its called). I pulled out the relay and disconnected the battery then called a tow truck.
The next day I walked out to it and popped the relay back in and hooked up the battery and it started up perfectly fine, and ran fine. I said ok and drove it 2 weeks and the samething happened again last night.

I have looked at all the wiring I can see in the engine bay. I even pulled the fuse box out and inspected the wiring. I may have missed something. Ive ran out of ideas and I refuse to drive it until I find it. Any help would be great.

Lets get on the same page - look at these pages from the RAVE, and tell us which relay it is. Numbers and actual descriptions are listed.

 

R9 Is the one thats buzzing. Which is the main relay.

Also I forgot to mention. Sometimes when this happens. If the KEY is OFF and I turn the heated seats off my headunit stays on. If I turn them on the headunit goes off.

 

And main relay is a good name. It powers up all the sensors, enables several fuses and circuits beyond them, and some more relays. Pages from RAVE attached. Any codes stored?

Guess when it is happening you could pull fuses to make it stop, may narrow it down.

 

I read the codes on the spot when it died the second time. Gave me a camshaft sensor code which I knew was going bad anyways and Ive replaced already. Id love to diagnose things when its happening but it will never happen while im in the driveway. It has to happen beside the highway. lol

 

Turning on seats with key off should require that relay #7 be stuck on. Pull it out and see if it seat heat still works.

 

You have a bad crank position sensor.

 

Will try. Could this relay be stuck on and cause the engine to shut its self down?

 

Brand new crank sensor. and those do not cause relays to buzz when they go bad as far as I know.

 

Whoa - you said Cam Shaft sensor before - they are two different animals. Crank Position Sensor won't let you crank, or will stop you. The buzzing noise may be something else. See attached. If replacing, be sure to assemble same way it came off - bolts+spacer+sensor+block. Spacer does not go between unit and block.
