HG - or cracked block. Usually HG. Cracked block test is done with heads off, block off plates, and shop air pressure.

 

Hello, Thanks for all the help. Got a couple more questions for all the Land Rover Gurus. #1. Is there a way to tell if it is the HG vs. a cracked block besides a block test, like any tell-tell signs that could only be one or the other. #2. if it is in fact the HG, do the heads always need to be resurfaced?

Keep in mind that there is no water in the oil, or oil in the water. The hoses get rock hard when in heats up. Besides that it runs like a Champ, no skipping, hesitating, or rough runs. Thanks.

 

The block test is done with heads off, but before parts are purchased for the repairs, or machine shop work is done.

The heads have to be checked at the very least. The check for flatness is 0.002 inch, this is usually measured with a feeler gauge and a machinist's straight edge. The machine shop will do this as an inspection. Minimal charge. Machine shop skim of the heads is about 200 bucks in some markets, and could be lower or higher.

So, if you have the engine taken apart, then the test may show you have no reason to put it back together. But if you did the HG work, without a block test, then you must like the odds at Vegas.

 

Do you know if there is a way I can perform this test. I am going to do the repairs my self, with the exception of taking the heads to the machine shop. Thanks

Nope, because you can have exhaust gas in the coolant, and oil is not in the formula. But exhaust gas is a "fluid" so your premise is correct.

 

So I could still have a cracked block even though I have no oil/water mixtures?

 

That would be correct, a cracked block can allow exhaust gas into the coolant, boiling the coolant jug, hoses rock hard, but oil is simply pushed hotter than it should be, and thins out, dropping pressure. A chemical test will tell for sure. The test liquid changes color from exhaust gas in the coolant bottle.
