Just got a Disco 2
Hey guys, I just purchased a 99 Discovery today. I wanted to get on here and ask some questions. My disco runs and drives great, but I was wondering what are some common problems to look for and fix. I don't have any repair history so I am going to do a basic tune up with drive belts, plugs, wires, coolant flush. I was wondering if the disco's have a timing belt or chain, either way I plan to replace that as well. Ohh and I'm not going to change tranny fluid because I don't know if it has ever been changed and it has 87k miles on it. I figure I will just wait till I have a reason and then rebuild it.
So other than those things, what maintenance things should I look into?
Also on a different note, I was wanting some fixing up ideas. I currently live in Florida but will be moving to Colorado soon for a few years. So I'm wanting to make a rig that can be a daily driver while still holding its own on the weekends. I want to do some mild rock climbing and trails in CO and I will mainly be using it for the mud and some trails here in FL. So far I have figured I would start out with a Rovertym Engineering 3" lift kit and probably 33" tires. I was wondering if this sounds good as well as what upgraded diffs people are using. Any help will be appreciated.
Ohh and I purchased this rig just for this purpose so I am sure I want to lift and use offroad

After reading a few thread I realize that discomike is going to ask what else I plan to do. So I eventually plan to put a steel front bumper with winch and lights on the truck, as well as a low profile roof rack.
Is it a DI or DII? 99 is the only year that had both.
I ask because DIs are electrically much simpler. A lot easier to work on. DIIs are more complex, more that can go wrong, but at the same time have more goodies off road

First thing you need to do is do my complete list of services listed on this site, including the tranny
You have a timing chain, not a belt.
Make sure to use 8 mm Magnacor wires only.
I would also suggest you stay more with a 2" lift, be it OME or RTE, instead of the 3 ".
Ok guys my truck is a D2, I'm not sure which model but it doesn't have sunroofs or air suspension(which is good because I hear I would be removing it anyway.
As far as the electrical goes I'm ASE certified and pretty proficient in electrical diagnosis, so I'm not too worried about that.
With the 2" 3" thing I was wondering what are some of the pros and cons to each. Can the 2" still clear 33"s. As far as I can figure the only pros would be cost and driveshafts not needing changing. But thanks for all the help guys

2" will not clear 33's, neither will the 3". Take your truck out in stock form, you'll be surprised at what it can accomplish without any mods. Most people come in here begging for around 4-6" of lift and 35" tires come back after a stock wheeling trip and change their mind. Unless you're doing the most hardcore trails around you will be towing the Jeeps and Yotas on 35" boggers out of the mud riding on 2" of lift and a decent set of 265/75 M/Ts.
