Angry "Knock" When shifting from N to D

Ok so I just bought an 04 SE with 70k on it and I've been noticing a "rotating" whining noise (Like the sound something would make while spinning) and some vibrations while acelerating at low speeds...basically from a stop. I've also noticed, and this is my major concern, that when I shift from N to D I can hear this bang when the gears shift that I assume is coming from the trasmission. It's not terribly loud, but you can def hear it in the car with the radio off and the windows up. The car also, "raises up" (for lack of a better description) a bit when I switch from N to D, but it just seems like this could be it switching into drive. Does anyone have any idea what this could be. I'm hoping for lose transmission mount or something relatively cheap.....and not, you need a new transmission. Thanks for any help guys.

Have you rebuilt your front prop-shaft with serviceable U-Joints? I would check there first, sounds like that may be the problem......look the write-up section and do a search, DO NOT DRIVE IT until you figure out what it is...

Ok it's parked until I can get it into the shop. I have only owned the car for about two weeks now, so I haven't done anything to it besides replace some random cosmetic parts. I'll search the U-Joint and go from there. Thanks for the help!

Yes it's bad news when the U-Joints fail, the drive-shaft does all kinds of damage to your transmission, cats, and even t-case. Too many people have learned this the hard way....there are pictures posted somewhere.

There's a write-up on how to rebuilt yourself, or give those part numbers a shop and have them rebuild it.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes, and how much it cost if you get it done.

Here are some pictures showing what happens when a DS fails....scroll down to the pictures of the underside.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the help. I've found the link to the parts numbers from the link and will be ordering them now! I'm surprised there isn't a better solution to this problem then having to buy new greasable u-joints! I love Discos, but my god some of the engineering doesn't make sense! thanks again for the help....i would've kept driving it if it hadn't been for this thread!
