Has anyone out here ever seen this issue occurring on a Range Rover Sport?

I bought this car brand new from Land Rover in Atlanta in 2006 and have not done anything to the paint job. LR has told me that they won't help with repair since it is out of warranty and they claim that they have never seen a case like this. I find this hard to believe. Have gotten estimates ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 to repair.

 

looks like garden variety clear coat UV failure and peel off, find an indy paint and body shop. Look at older cars in the parking lot, you'll see plenty of this, and Rover paint is not much different from Mercedes paint, Caddy paint, or Honda paint.

As far as them having never seen this, since they would lie about that, not much question that they are ready to use the new "WHAMO" shop computer on you (Wallet Heist And Major Overbilling - version 5.2).

 

Yup, "sun spots".
Go to Macco, have them scuff it and shoot it.
Since its just the roof they dont need to blend the color, they can just paint it the OEM color and be done.
If it were a fender it would need to be blended to match the rest of the faded paint.

 

Looks like typical sunfade to me. Happens more often than you'd think, alot of folks neglect the roof since its a pain to reach but it, along wth the hood take a beating from the sun and need constant attention. Certain pigments in some paint colors (such as yours) dont take UV well at all and make the effect even worse. Kind of like the red cars you see that have turned pink from lack of care. Anyway its not to bad but the dealer will just laugh at you if you try and make them pay for it. Paint is one of those things that the maker has no control over, its all in how the owner takes care of the finish, sort of like expecting tires to be covered under warranty if you know what I mean. Not trying to beat you up but paint doesnt bake itself, if it fell off that would be a different story.

Now to your repair options, you have roof seems that run the length of the vehicle so no blending is required (if they tell you they are blending anything they are lying to you). Depending on the paint cost, $1000 sounds close, $3000 better include the rest of the vehicle.

If you find a good body shop and the clear coat is not baked through, they can carefully sand the clearcoat flat and re clear the entire roof for much less than painting it. If its to thin or already through to the base coat then you'll certainly need new paint.

 

It is not a lemon and you have no recourse against Rover. Do you always park it out side, when was the last time you polished and waxed it?
A good body shop can sand the clear coat off and reapply a new coat of clear coat.
