Loud Noise In The Morning
Hello,
My Husband and I just purchased a used 2003 Land Rover Discovery. We noticed in the mornings there is loud whining noise when we start the car and drive it approx one block then it stops. We took it in for the problem and supposedly it was fixed whatever it was but it wasn't. In desparation my Husband took a better listen to it this morning with the hood up and it seems to be the SAI Pump. Is it normal for this pump to make a louder noise in the mornings?
Thanks so much for the help!

The secondary air pump can be noisy. What exactly did the dealer hear and fix? You may need to leave the truck over night so they can cold start it to hear what you are talking about.
Thanks Mike,
We did leave it overnight and in fact the dealership had it 6 days! My husband picked it up and failed to get a print out of what was done so I have asked for it. They are not responsive at all and we are very disappointed in the service here in San Antonio. I found a post regarding the same type of thing and your reply to that one was that it was pretty common. It is definitely coming from the SAI and it is a loud whining (I described it as almost like a vacuum sound) and then it stops and doesn't happen again until the first start of the day. I am hoping to hear that this is anormal noise and I don't have to take it back to the LR dealership UGGGGG! A one day appt turned into 6!

Let me know what the work ordered said after you get it, you may at some point need to call Rover's District office and speal to the local district service rep.
Okay Mike,
I finally talked with the Service Manager. He said the noise is normal. It is the Secondary Air Intake and it is required because of California law that requires that the polutants that are exhausted at this time are diluted and that is what it is doing. He said it should only make the noise upon initial startup and not sound for over 90 seconds. He told me that if water has found it's way into the SAI that it will be louder.
My AC fan has now started to make loud noises on high. I asked about this also and he said that a leaf or kleenex that has made it's way into the blower can cause the squirrel cage to be off balance and can cause this noise. I asked how we can self diagnose it and he said that you can open the glove box and there is a mesh cover inside at the back. WITH THE FAN OFF and the cover removed he said you can feel the squirrel cage and work whatever it is out with your fingers.
I would appreciate your input on both subjects.
Thanks!

You may want to call me. I believe your dealer is right on your noise and if whater got into the motor he should drian it or if damaged, replace it. Are you under warranty, did he give you a copy of the work order, if not get one so you have a paper trail if needed. As for the a/c fan noise, he is correct, the blower is behind and below the glove box. Your husband may be able to get in there and clen it out, depends on how mechanical he is.

Thanks Mike,
I finally got in touch with the Service Manager and got a copy of the paperwork. We are scheduled to take it back in on Tuesday so we will see. It is still under warranty for a little bit longer and we want to get everything taken care of. Thanks for the help.
