Default M and S lights

Bought a 2004 disco 2 and noticed whenever I use reverse then go into drve the M and S lights come on and stay on until I restart it. If I do not use reverse they never come on. I've read a few threads on here but cannot find this specific problem.

Are you getting any codes? Could be faulty battery terminals, poor voltage levels. Possibly it could be you XYZ switch (trans shift indicator switch, mounted on trans at cable end), out of adjustment or going bad.

Do the Option B fix first simply because it costs nothing and is so easy. That will rule out a lot of things and might solve your problem altogether.

New XYZ switch would be more costly, after all.

With the issue you're describing I'd check the XYZ switch adjustment. It sounds like it's faulting due to not properly reading what gear it's actually in.

Also be very thorough with your battery leads. Remove them, clean them, and widen them, and make absolutely sure they sit all the way down on the battery and tighten up fully. I just worked on a D2 that the customer took to 3 local shops who all quoted $$$ for bad XYZ, and even a transmission, and it ended up being loose, and dirty battery connections.
