Default M and S Lights on Intermittently

I've got a 99 TD5 Disco and the M and S lights have come on intermittently a couple of times in the last two weeks. I had the tranny serviced after the first time but unfortunately the lights had gone off by then. The mechanics cleared some fault codes (for $180) and did a service but nothing else noted.

I read about the crankshaft position switch in other posts but this appeared to be related to the V8. Any thoughts?

The RAVE shop manual has a section on the automatic gearbox, with all the trouble codes. But there is just one that only turns on the M&S lights and does not turn on the MIL (check engine light).

P1562 (24) * Battery supply below 9V while engine running

Maintains current gear in low range, limp home mode in range. Shift pressure to maximum, harsh gear shifts/engagement.

This can be bad battery, bad connection at posts on battery, in the under hood fuse box connections, or follow the negative lead from the battery to frame ground and check connections. Once that is eliminated the rest of the wiring to tranny ecu can come into consideration, and even the evil XYZ switch on the side of the transmission can be full of mud and water.

Crank Shaft Position sensor is not an issue IMHO.

For $185 in my area at a dealer, you don't get a whole lot of tranny service - maybe a code reset and top off fluid. What did they actually do?

Have your charging system tested, running voltage should be between 13.6 and 14.4 volts with clean tight cables and grounds.

Default M & S Lights

Thanks for the advice guys, checked the RAVE manual after post and had basically come to that conclusion, though nice to have it supported.

The $180 was just for clearing the codes, another $240 for the service.

All appears good at present, so will keep fingers crossed and have input voltage checked.

Thanks again.
