Default New To LR, need direction please/thanks

Hello,
I'm considering venturing into the world of Land Rover and was hoping for some direction (or to be talked out of it). My need; a recreation vehicle to tow a boat around Florida. My budget; under 6k. My idea; get into a LR with 100k+- that I'm sure will need some repairs but customize it a little, make repairs and use it recreationally for as many miles as it will go!
I have found several 2004 Disco 2's with mileage from 90k and up for $4000 and up. So the advice I'm looking for is;
*What would I be getting myself into?
*What would be the red flags I should look for?
*LR with 100k+ miles, are the dependable?
*Can these vehicle be driven to 250-300,000 miles? with proper care and maintenance?
*Should I be shopping a Range Rover? Newer models like the LR's?
Thank you in advance,
James

If you are purely towing on highways the LR3 or even the D2 is hard to beat. In both instances you should get a very good LR within your budget. The Range Rovers available are the P38 or L322 both of which are complex and pricey for spares. The LR's in general need good regular servicing and maintenance as does any 4x4. IMO (I cannot speak for the V8 gas engine) but you should be OK for a good D2 or LR3 with around 100K miles and maybe slightly more. Speaking of D2's they are good for 250K miles provided they are correctly looked after, I cannot comment on others.

The V-8's are subject to blown head gaskets, particularly in the 4.6 variety. Maintenance is the key. Even that may not be enough.
