New Member Needs Help!!!!
Hi there.
FNG here, I just recently bought a 1999 Range Rover 4.6 HSE P38 or whatever else they call it. It was a fixer-upper and I'm starting to worry that I bit off a lot more then I could shew at this point. Here's the deal, the owner had, drove it for a few years until the transfer chain needed to be replaced (common problem I'm told with these trucks) so I thought, sure ...I can put a transfer case in it. So I bought it for a song and bought a used transfer case from a junkyard in OK w/60k on it for $700 w/ a 90 return warranty.
These past few days I put the the transfer case up into the truck, hooked up all the wires and so on. This morning I hooked up the drive shafts and I put it up on all four jack stands and put it in drive and...............nothing. None of the wheels turned even a bit in any of the gears or even reverse. So after swearing and throwing **** around in the garage for the past 10 minutes I thought I'd try to diagnose it a little and try to see wtf is going on.
While it is running and in gear (on blocks) it doesn't really sound too much noisier then I think it should, of course I really don't know what exactly it should sound like but there's no noises like teeth slipping or belts getting wrapped or such.
The computer on the dash says, "Gear Box Error" after I shut everything down, not too sure what that means, whether that's the transmission, the transfer case or the front or rear gear differentials. Hopefully someone can help me on that on?
The two wires that connect at the bottom of the transfer case, I switched them to see if it mattered which post they were connected and it didn't make any difference.
Once again, I hope that someone here can help me figure this out because I am really in over my head on this one here. Another problem is that I'm doing all this without a shop manuel because the former owner says he's mailing it to me soon (Yeah, right).
I'll probably end up posting this on a couple of other forums just because I'm not too sure which forums are active yet or not and I need help like it's going out of style.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Nate
