Default Newbie, No PAS at idle revs. Help needed

Hi All,

Just became a member, but I have used your posts in the past for help with my 03 Discovery 2, so thanks for that!!

Anyhow, last week my PAS pump gave out, it started as a low rotor (think helicopter) noise, then got really bad and gave out spraying power steering fluid everywhere from just behind the pulley mount. This all happened in a very short space of time (a few miles) and on a holiday weekend, typical!

So I found the one and only PAS pump available within 50 miles (Duralast Steering Pump, looks different but fits the same as OEM) and picked up a new serpentine belt while I was there. I installed the new PAS Pump and belt. I syphoned out the old pas fluid and filled with new and then bled the valve on the steering box and topped up as needed, turning lock to lock etc at the same time. All the fluid coming out of the bled valve is clear and fresh looking.

The issue I have now is that at low rev/idle speeds I have no power steering. so corners and parking are a real effort! The PAS fluid was I used was Havoline General purpose with leak fix.

Any one have any advice? I am new to both land rovers and maintenance, but I'm fairly adept at working things out and following instructions....

Maybe worn box on its way out?

Having some steering problems of my own. I have
1 replaced pump (premium all makes)
2 replaced box
3 removed damper to see if it was seized
4 dropped track bar to see if issue was isolated to one side
Still have not found my issue, but may help you
I am also in the process of turning up pressure on another pump. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks Dusty,

I'm kind of hoping that there is a small leak somewhere that I can fix, would that cause P/S loss at low pressure?? There was so much mess after it blew it's difficult to spot leaks! I really don't want to change the box.

Yes leak can reduce pressure
I put that uv dye in my fluids to help locate any leaks. Makes it an easy task
