Default P0741 Code on 2000 Disco II - Help Needed

I purchased a 2000 Disco II that will not move in any gear. My hand held analyzer gives me a P0741 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off error code.

Could this be a simple fix? If so, where do I start? Where is the torque converter clutch located? Could this be the problem?

I was told by a Land Rover tech to first check the fluid...if dark...ditch and replace transmission. If the fluid looked good...check the engine ECU for some type of ??????? monitor fault(can't remember the exact wording he used) but basically the MAF could be bad causing the problem. This seemed strange but anything is possible. Does anyone know what he was referring to?

Either way...I am keeping my fingers crossed that it's a simple fix instead of a new transmission. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

The tranny and the ECU carry on a conversation about engine load, etc. The MAF being dirty can make the ECU report illogical data to the tranny computer.

You would be well advised to drain tranny fluid and replace filter as well. The parts are all inside the tranny. And inside the RAVE shop manual you'll find out all about it.

Default P0741 Code on 2000 Disco II - Help Needed

Thanks for the prompt reply. I will start by checking fluid level, replace filter and fluid.

Do you know if the torque converter clutch is easy to see once you remove the pan? I am downloading the Rave manual that you suggested...hopefully I can see images that will point me in the right direction.

I will post any results that I get...thanks!

Not that it'll solve your problem, but i had slipping bad of gears 2 and 3 and a trans error code. changed the MAF and it was back to normal. amazing what scouring forums can tell you.

I'm also experiencing P0741 and stalling out when the vehicle stops rolling. After reading thru these forums, I replaced the MAF Sensor in an effort to try to avoid replacing the transmission. Sure enough, it was helpful. I'm still getting the P0741 code, but there is a lot less stalling out now. I notice occasional bog-down at stops, but the engine no longer fully stalls.

I'm probably going to need heavy transmission service if not a rebuild soon, but at least I'm not stalling out at every red light any more.

An update to my situation, just FYI - after a month or so with the new MAF the D2 started stalling out again, to the point where I needed to put it in neutral as I was rolling up to a stop to prevent it stalling. I got pretty good at that move. Reputable tranny shop and second reputable LR mechanic says we needed a rebuild, so that's what happened in May. No more tranny issues!
