Default Premium gas? is it a must?

Fairly new Land Rover lover, recently purchased a 1998 p38 and the original owner said he has only put premium gas in it. I have been doing the same since i have had it but was wondering if it is truly beneficial to keep feeding her premium? (especially when gas is looking like its going to continue going up)

Thanks

Yes it is worth it and it is a must, your Rover will die a slow, painful and very expensive death if you put low grade gas in it.

Default premium gas

First of all, I do use premium and will continue to use it when I can. That said, my RR is a'98 and waiting for a new engine. But, these engines are a very old basic design and can run on regular without much problem. When I bought my LR2, my salesman leased one and said he was using regular. I got 2-3 mpg better than he did and mostly drove 5-6 miles per trip up and down three good sized hills, while he drove 15 miles mostly on interstate. In other words you don't save $$ by using cheaper gas.

The LR2 has a completely different motor, so comparing what gas to use in one of those to a DII or a P38 is apples and oranges. You might want to read up about WHY premium fuel is REQUIRED for the 4.0L and the 4.6L Rover V8's before giving advice to the contrary.

Unless you consider your motor as a disposable, yes.
