Default Rear Differential

Alright my rear differential pan has a small hole in it I thought I would be able to just take it off but after getting under it it is welded on, how should I go about looking at the differential gear and insides to find out if it is going to need to be replaced?

The 'pan' should be part of the axle casing... the diff unit bolts into it, as you look at it, from the front of the vehicle.

What gives you reason to think you might need to replace, or even inspect it? The stock Rover diffs aren't particularly delicate or prone to failure. Fair enough if you know it's been run dry I supose, but I'd fill it back up with oil after plugging the hole with some chemical metal or similar, jack it up and hand turn each rear wheel and the the rear prop to check for noises before even considering dropping the diff out of it. If theres no noises then road test it and if all sounds well... then it probably is.

HTH,

ya I wouldn't usually just drop the diff. out but the hole was cause by I believe something breaking inside and punching the hold because the hole goes from the inside out.
