Default 89 Classic Rear Differential Prob. Newbie Help!

Alright about two weeks ago I was driving a I guess from what the auto shop said is that my rear diff. something went bad with it and now there is a pen sized hole in it and all the fluid has leaked out. I haven't driven it at all but I don't want to spend 2,000 to replace the whole rear end couldn't I just weld over the very small hole and replace the rear diff? If anyone has heard of this happening before or knows what to do please contact me!! Thanks

I know a chap who did that on a standard car, & was successful, but I personallywould not advise on a 4x4...

You have to be really lucky with a tiny amount of damage for one!
& then quite skilled at welding (& he was!!)
Then be 100% sure you have removed all debris from inside the rear diff!! - & itslikely to be really badly scored if a piece of metal was eventually thrown through the wall!! - I would not risk it!

Check out ascrapyard for your parts,!! - you dont have to pay fornew!! - or, even buy a 2nd RR as a donor vehicle!!
get some friends over, grab the tools & a Haynes manual & have a fun weekend!!

Thats what I would do, IMHO of course.

Good Luck.
