Default Replace lifter / rockers when doing HG

I am looking to do the top end of an engine (HG / Front Cover) and have done a lot of research on this and other LR boards. The article here:

Engine Refresh (Part 3) | PaulP38A.com

Suggests that I should do the lifters / rockers as the author didn't do initially and had to go in and do a short time later. My question is - is this necessary? I am on a budget and I never do a job like this... I want to do it right but I also don't want to waste time / money if I don't have to. Thanks for the help.

if your going to lifters and rockers you need to do the cam, if your doing the cam, you might as well do the timing chain, if your doing the timing chain, you might as well do the oil pump. See where it goes.

Last summer I did rocker arms and shafts when I did my valley gasket. This past summer I did cam, lifters, timing chain, timing gears and the oil pump.

If you do rocker arms you need to replace the shafts also. Small pieces of metal get embedded in the rocker arms and wear doen the shaft. I replaced mine because I had ticking and my arms were old enough to have issues (theres a tech bull that has the date codes) with the pushrod cups becoming loose causing ticking. When I pulled them off, the shafts were worn also.

When I did my head gaskets, some lifters were showing wear. That lead me to replacing the cam, timing gears and chain, water pump and oil pump gears.
