Default replacing spark plugs, wires, and now this?

I have had some recent trouble with my 2000 Land rover Discovery (82,000 miles), the engine seems to be hesitant and has been making a noise every few seconds.I took it to one of my mechanics (an EX-land rover mechanic) and he quoted me for 915 dollars to do the following: replace the valve gasket, put on new plugs and wires, and replace the front driver side oxygen sensor (had some oil on the top). That sounded a bit steep on labor when comparing to parts that seem to cost 250-350, so i called the dealer to see how much this would cost, and how much the parts are. The dealer told me in order to do this i would need to buy the list of parts below, and with labor it would cost me $2,322.54 with tax

plenum gasket- $73.00
spark plug wires- $40.00 X 8
spark plugs - $16 X 8
valve gasket - $31.30
oxygen sensor - $120.00

and also, i have been told some of the discovery parts are not too great so i looked/read throughout the forum and came up with this stuff:

Plenum Gasket- $30.00 from dealer
Spark plugs - $6.99 X 8 from HereBosch platinum +4
Spark plug wires - 70.00 Magnecor 8mm
Valve gasket - $19.00 X 2 from a website
Oxygen Sensor - $70.00 from some website

My question to you guys is, Do i need to replace the plenum gasket if i plan on replacing the plugs, wires, and valve gasket? And also, do youthink ishould do theserepairs on my own ( with some helpfrom a friend of course )? or should i just fork out the 1,000 dollars ? Thank you!

thanks for your help everyone!

The reason you need to replace the upper plenum gasket when you change out the spark plug wires --- is because you have to remove the upper plenum to properly route the wires. And the plenum gasket is a "one-use" product. To try and do otherwise is very time consuming and aggravating.

But-- with that said, yes --you could do these repairs yourself if you have any automotive mechanical experience.
