rough running

i have 1985 defender 110 that has just started running rough. it is misfiring and from exhaust black carbon smoke coming out. any suggestions it is a 2.5 petrol.

It could be the valves making the knocking sound and this could cause black smoke on your exhaust if it goes bad.

Check or replace your plugs and wires, same with the cap and rotor. Do a compreson test to rule out valves, check for vacuum leaks, consider decarboning the engine and check your timing.
