Default Shifting Issues on Range Rover

Hello,
I recently purchased a 1996 4.6 HSE Range Rover with just under 150k miles. The car is pretty clean inside and out. I however, bought the car with the knowledge of there being a transmission problem. The car will drive but you must first start the car with in in low gear (1) and once it gets to about 10-15 mph you have to shift it back into drive and from there it drives great.

I am wondering what the problem is, and where I can look? I have heard from a few people its not the actual transmission but rather a Transmission sensor or shifter linkage?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Chad

Start by replacing the transmission fluid and filter.
It will not be a linkage issue, it is either a clogged filter or a bad clutch.
