Default Sounded Like a Motor Running Under the Rear Bumper

We are on a trip - towing our Disco II behind our motor home.

Once connected, I placed the 4x4 shifter into the Neutral position and Trans into Park - just like advised by other who also tow. I turned the key in the ignition to the SECOND position and heard a motor running under or around the rear bumper. It sounded like a power window motor noise. If I turn the key to the FIRST position, the noise goes away.

Any idea(s) what this noise was/is from???

Thanks

Fuel pump makes a noise when running, and can be stopped by removing fuse 10 under hood. If truck has secondary air injection, I would suppose you might hear that pump motor out the exhaust, it blows air into the exhaust ports at cold start to burn off extra pollution. It has a relay in the underhood fuse box.

Well, I thought fuel pump should cut off in like two or three seconds if it does not see 80 rpm or better from the crank position sensor. If fuel pump is not turning off, that is another issue.

Interesting on the Fuel Pump.

But should the fuel pump be running if the engine isn't? We are hearing the sound with the engine off and the ignition key is in the #2 position.

In your other post you state noise is from dash area....

You can pull fuse to isolate fuel pump. I understand that some of the gps generation may not be able to interpret the schematic diagrams, they do look like old Shell road maps....
