Steering grearbox free play
I have a 1997 Discovery with 157k miles I just bought, and has 6 inches of free play at the steering wheel caused by the steering gearbox. I tightened the alen bolt on the top of the box all the way down and it did not take much play out.
1. Do these gearboxes have a reputation for gear wear causing excessive lash?
2. Are their shims that can be removed?
3. Should I just get a low millage junkyard box?

I think I read there is a metal bushing that wears out. A used one would be hit or miss. I'm happy with the used D1 box I bought for my 90. It was only $25. I figured that was cheaper than a core, if it turned out to be junk and then I could use it to buy a rebuilt. (I was converting to power steering, so I didn't have a box already).
