Default Sythetic swap

Hey all... heres a qwickie

Just got my new-to-me 98 RR 4.6HSE....

Interested in doing a sythetic swap to Poyal Purple, which i run in my rotary. The truck has 132k on it though. Would this be bad with all the miles? I got a hand slap when i suggested it for my Volvo 850 turbo wagon.... Also up in the 200k club...

any help? also....

Filters and plugs.... reccomended?

Thanks so much!

Synthetic will work well at your mileage, with time it will clean out your engine, or you might want to do an ATF flush then go to a new synthetic, use either a Mobil 1 or a K&N 3001 for your filter.
If you are changing out your plugs and wires I would suggest the Magnacor 8mm wires and Bosch Plutinum Plus 4's.
Here is my list, you might want to use it as a guide.

This is the parts list for a 60,000 mile service the way I do it.
1 Oil filter, K&N 3001
1 Air filter
6 Qts of engine oil
12 Qts of ATF
7 Qts of 80/90W gear oil
2 Qts of Brake fluid
2 Qts of synthetic Power steering fluid
2 Gallons of OAT, orange coolant
1 Bottle of Lucas Power Steering additive
1 Bottle of Lucas Transmission additive
1 Can of Spray Carb. Spray
1 Can Of Brake cleaner
8 Spark Plugs, I use Bosch Platium Plus 4's
1 Set of Magnacor 8mm plug wires
1 Serpentine belt if not yet replaced
2 Bottles of SeaFoam

60,000 Mile Service or Major Service for High Mileage Used Vehicle just purchased
Bleed the brakes
Flush and change the power steering fluid adding one bottle of additive
Service the tranny adding one bottle of additive
Flush the coolant system
Do an engine flush before changing the oil
Do an induction cleaning
Clean the throttle body
Add fuel additive to full gas tank
Change both of the diffs fluid
Change the t/case oil
Replace the plugs and wires
Replace the air filter
Lube all the drive shaft grease fitting including the 2 slip shafts
Do full inspection of brakes, hoses, bushings etc.

Hopefully I didn't leave anything out.
Mike

I agree with Mike.

And, as an FYI, I switched everything over to RP with 90K on the motor and 126 on the driveline. Does just fine...

Oh, and would have done well in your 850. I had 200K on my 90 780 Bertone. The B230FT engine loved it.

Okdisco.... so you think a sythetic swap in my 850 which is over 200k is still an ok idea?

Mike... clear me up a bit..

- when you say ATF flush, are you meaning, flush the ENGINE with ATF? or the tranny? As you mentioned in the other thread, my tranny is too old to start flushing correct? so i assume you mean flush the engine with ATF? So... whats the process? how does this work?

- RE the tranny, swapping for a synthetic is still a good idea... just dont flush it? how many quarts does it take?

- talk to me about orange coolant vs green ( ive only run green)

-any good write-ups on...

-changing diff fluids
-drive shaft grease up
-induction and TB cleaning
-where to dump seafoam
-transfer case oil change

thanks for putting up with my reduntand nature... i like things crystal clear.... im slow like that : )

guess i should buy a chilton or haynes... unless theres an FSM around?

also... any reason the previous owner would have installed Bilstiens in the rear and not the front?

Synthetics are great...for other vehicles. They handle extreme pressure super well and last a long time..they are cutting edge.

However, your LR V8 has a low-pressure, high-volume oil system that needs none of the great qualities that synthetics provide at their MUCH higher price. As well, synthetics are leading the pack in eliminating ZDDP, the ancient anti-friction modifier needed by all flat tappet engines and your engine is also one of the last flat tappet engines on the road.

The best solution is to find a high detergent mineral motor oil that still has a ZDDP level at the old level like CASTROL GTX DIESEL 15W-40 or, better still, call Amsoil as they have a few oils that are not following the crowd and ask their advice. The diesel works because there are still few diesel engines on cats.. But don't trust any oil for long as the ZDDP level are being changed every day without the name being changed.

Change your oil change interval to 3000 miles. Your engine will thank you for it. If the oils used to date have already developed a bit of tappet or cam damage for you (listen for a clicking or tapping sound on start up), there is a supplement you can use to stop that.

For plugs..look into the NGK iridiums if don't mind spending money, or a "v" or split tip if you do.

New oil plug washers or a bit of plumber's tape.

I have used the same oil plug for 6 years, I just keep turning it over and reinstalling it.

Of course, me too..

By "oil plug washers" I was referring to the crush washer used to insure against leaks at the plug. They come in copper or plastic fiber. When in need, one can use a bit of plumber's tape (aka teflon) around the threads of the plug..and that will do as well.
