Default tacho problem...

Hi guys and I will apologise straight up, for asking something that has probably already been discussed...... I have just got myself a 1994 V8 Discovery and the tacho just sits at zero and no sign of movement. I have read that the tacho not working can be a sign that the alternator is on the way out, is this right?? What other signs would there be if this is the case. Or could there be another common problem for it not working? can the nedle come loose on the spindle?? Again thanks guys any help would be appreciated...

Welcome Scotty!

You are correct in suspecting the alternator. The tach signal is derived from it.
