TD5 eratic engine power
I have a Y reg TD5 Disco of around 60,000 miles- I’m not really into DIY repairs but I am looking for some ideas that I can put to a mechanic as to what might need looked at as it’s so far proved elusive- not least because it seems intermittent.
The problem is that while driving along steadily mainly at urban speeds 20-40 mph there is a tendency for the car to feel as though it’s first pulling then pushing back on me- a bit like engine braking I guess. At times it can be a real pig to drive- other times it’s OK. It seems to accelerate fine and whiz up-and down the open road- though you can still feel the sensation.
The other thing it does- and it can be quite alarming- is when say you have dropped down to 2nd to take a slow corner the engine suddenly pulls away and I find myself accelerating without touching the accelerator.
One other test I’ve done (with what meaning I don’t really know) if on a quiet street I just sit in say 2nd or 3rd gear and allow the car just to drift along you get this sudden pull forward followed by a retardation followed by “normality” then a pull forward and so on.
So far I’ve had the airflow meter changed, the exhaust studs replaced (slight leak) and the gas recycling system blanked off- to no avail.
So any ideas?
Thanks
Peter

First off go to a qualified land rover mechanic and describe your symptoms and take the vehicle on a test drive with him so he is aware of the problems you describe. Then he can diagnose the vehicle quickly and effectively. Telling you what might happen may not be right. Mechanics diagnose and repair things, not put parts on that guys on the internet tell him to put on.
I think I've got to the bottom of the problem and it's a known issue that was apparently fixed by LR before my Disco was built. Basically oil is getting into the engine management unit electrical socket (Red one). I've now cleaned it out three times in the past 3 weeks or so. The odd thing is that there is no apparent leakage of oil through the loom or directly on to the socket and the only conclusion is that it's actually passing through though the wire core itself. The Haynes manual wiring diagram does not seem to cover the engine wiring loom so it's difficult to work out which wire(s) it might be and where they come from.
