Default Tranny fluid came POURING out of the fill point!

Hey guys,

What the heck? As per my research, the bottom screw is for draining, and the upper screw is for filling.

When I popped the upper screw off the transmission, I had 2 or more quarts come bursting out of there! I got it all over my driveway because I didn't have the drain pan positioned properly for that.

Does anyone know what could cause this?

No. I supposed I should add some qualifiers here:

Vehicles is on a flat surface.
Engine off.
Temperature of engine is cold.
I did not unscrew the drain plug on the underside of the transmission pan.

All I did was unscrew the fill screw and a good couple of quarts came pouring out. I let it drip until you normally would when you have if you were filling it and capped it back up.

Advice?

engine should be running. the fluid levels are to be circulating.
I fill on an incline. so engine off = fluid settling and pouring out.
now, have it running, add fluid, go through the range of gears, fill more.

Needs to be running. Here is the fill procedure from the RAVE (page 10-18)
9. Fill gearbox with recommended oil to bottom of oil level/filler plug hole.
10. Select 'P' (Park).
11. Ensure handbrake is applied.
12. Start engine and allow it to idle.
13. Apply footbrake.
14. Move selector lever through all gear positions, while continuing to fill the gearbox. select 'P' (Park).
15. With engine idling, continue filling gearbox until a 2 mm bead of oil runs from oil filler/level plug hole.
16. Fit new sealing washer to automatic gearbox filler/level plug, fit plug and tighten to 30 Nm (22 lbf.ft).
17. Stop engine.
18. Remove all traces of oil from gearbox casing.

Automatic Gearbox: Use Texamatic 9226, ATF Dexron IID or Dexron III for refill and topping-up
