undercarriage photo of '99 Disco II
I am searching for a photo taken from under a '99 Disco II while on a lift. I have had vehicle for 6 years and have every maintenance record on the vehicle from the original purchaser. When I purchased vehicle took to LR specialist and he did everything required at 120,000. It now has 133,000. I drove a company vehicle most of the time and this is now my primary ride. It has never had any problem, issue or needed major repairs. I took to have new tires put on and went out to talk to tech and check vehicle because I had closed the hood at Thanksgiving after checking fluids and had accidentally popped radiator hose up and thus it pushed back and melted a hole in it and had to be replaced. Bleed screw was hard to locate. while looking under engine on lift noticed one large black plug (of two was jammed up and to the side (maybe by oil change guys???) I put it back in empty hole but, is possible it has been that way for 2-3 months. noticed a little leakage in center seam of this case but it is not leaking enough to see on garage floor. Now squealing a small amount when I first start and a slight knock when I turn. I live 3 hours from nearest dealer but, will be in DC area next week. ANy suggestions for someone there that could take a look and do a little maintenance/tweaking? And also noticed there is a front axle that is not attached to anything. Did a little off road driving last week but, don't see anything that it should be attached to ...basically need an enthusiast willing to do a check up and show me what I'm looking at...obviously willing to pay for their time. I will be in the Fairfax Va area Tue, Wed, Thur (1/3-6/12) any suggestions or help much appreciated!~mb can email direct to marybethmanning1@gmail.com

Your problem is major, would not drive truck, would have local guys (any indy shop) look at it. Could be a drive shaft off. Can you take photo of items and post?
You don't have an axle off, or the vehicle would have to be dragged. You could have a prop shaft (drive shaft) torn loose. Or a steering rod of some sort. See attached. If the item loose is # 4, don't drive vehicle. The front propshaft can tear apart, and impale the transmission ($7,000 repair).
If you make it to DC (not advised without mechanic looking at it)
see http://fairfaxmotors.com/section/sec...ce-land-rover/
and there are a number of LR shops in the DC / Northern VA area.

link Disco Undercarriage shots
Nothing bad in the link but, figured faster to see all at once than upload individually.
Thanks for your thoughts and as it is not on lift it appears maybe the rod comes out of attachment point when weight of vehicle is not on it. Took these lying on the driveway at 2 AM and freezing so will try to get it on lift again tomorrow and take a good look. Is there something that should be attached at the front left tire as there is a point to attach but, nothing there that I can see and there are two attached rods on the right..
Much appreciate the manual. I downloaded it a few days ago but with 1597 pages hard for me to know what to look for. It does look like my truck needs a good cleaning to see if anything is actually leaking or if it is the road accumulation mixed with the radiator mess. I never see oil in the driveway but, did just after the last change but, not much. and check the oil almost weekly and never needs topping up....Think I will feel best letting a friend/mechanic (he does Disco work but hates it!) put it up on the lift and seeing if he thinks it is okay to drive it to where someone that knows what they're doing is. Any other thoughts greatly appreciated. I love this truck and want to restore it to it's full glory as it has been the best vehicle I have ever owned..before this I was a Bronco II nut! Thanks again!

Everything looks normal to me, including the oil leak. Looks like Photocrimes nailed it; the steering linkage that appears to be unattached (in picture #2) is supposed to be that way. It is used in a right-hand drive configuration of the Discovery as seen in the U.K., Australia, Japan, etc.
I am, however, still curious about what you said here.
Can you get a photo of the "large black plug" and the hole you put it back into?
Also curious how a hole got melted in a hose ...

In attached, note #14, appears to be as previous comment, connection point for right hand drive option.
Your pix actually show a pretty clean Disco. The oil on back of engine may be coming from several sources (rear main seal - short - medium term fix is a product called White Sheppard), rear of valley pan (gasket between engine and intake manifold), and the easiest fix of all, loose valve cover bolts. These should be snugged up every oil change. Advise mechanic to use an 8mm 12 point skinny or 1/4 inch drive socket.
Ask mechanic to be sure you have "zerk" grease fittings on both drive shafts, and that they are lubed every oil change.
