Default Valley Pan Gasket Does Not Line Up

Cleaned area, sealant on notches, lip seal, and rubber gasket. Installed valley, tighten lip seals down expecting valley gasket to pull into alignment. The word front is stamped on the end near the water pump. What did I miss?

The Rover Gods are against you when it comes to gaskets. This block doesn't want to be sealed up again. Let me LEAK!!! Damn you...!

I had this problem as well.

I believe the Rave says to fit the end clamps, then put the intake on, then tighten the end clamps.

I followed that the first time and it went well, intake and all, and it fit fine. Then I realized I forgot to put the rubber end seals in.

With the end seals in, the intake holes would not line up. In the process of "fitting", I destroyed the gasket. Got a new one and this time I carefully torqued the end clamps before fitting the intake. A couple of the intake bolts still felt impeded by gasket, but I was able to get them all in without stripping anything.

I feel for ya. This was the worst part of the whole process for me.

I did as you say also (refit lip seals, tried with and without, etc.), and got everything in, made two rounds of torque, and on last round bolt # 3 stripped out at 40 newton meters. I had most likely got it started wrong with the off center gasket.

Now more delay.

Oh man, that sucks.

On the bright side, as I found doing my gasket job, helicoiling isnt that difficult.

I seem to recall I had to push down, pretty hard, on the center of the valley gasket before applying end seals and clamps to get gasket to line up.
Sorry about the tardiness of response. Pinky's right. Heli-coil won't be too tough.

Peter over at discoweb had a solution for this issue:

head repaired but still leaking coolant - DiscoWeb Message Boards

I will say that I've never done this job before.... as far as land rovers go, I'm only a keyboard headgasket guy so far. ;-)

Intereseting, but to do that now I would need another set of head bolts. And the heads have two dowel pins for location anyway. Did pick up a helicoil set this afternoon on way to the salt mine.
