Vibration When Accelerating
2000 Disco II , about 75,000 miles. Experiencing a lot of vibration when accelerating. Initially thought it might have thrown a wheel weight...tire guys said it was probably transmission. Transmission guy hooked it up, did some diagnostics, said it was either engine performance problem or harmonic balancer - as you probably know, its a sealed case so he is hesitant to open it until some other things are eliminated.
The vibrations occur under power / load and stop when coasting and almost have a "grinding" feeling when it occurs.
Any thoughts?

Check your rear driveshaft flex coupling. It is a rubber/metal doughnut shaped part that bolts between the shaft and the rear differential pinion flange. These develop cracks in the rubber over time, and when about to fail ---introduce a lot of vibration into the vehicle, especially at highway speeds. I have them in stock for $78.00---if that turns out to be your problem.

RE: Vibration When Accelerating
Just had to replace my front drive shaft assembly due to that same problem in my 2001 DII. The front driveshaft unlike the rear does not have grease fittings... I took mine out and had it rebuilt for under 200 bux(if you get it rebuilt have them put fittings on it..).. The dealer wanted to replace the whole thing for about 1000.00!!! (Can you feel the vibration in the steering wheel???...If you can it is a good sign it is the front DS..)

As already mentioned, you can get the shaft rebuilt for under $200.
