An air hammer? Just to crack the fan nut loose? Or are you referring to the "head gasket" part of the title? Most people are just telling me to wedge something between one of the bolts holding the pulley in place, get a wrench on the big nut, and remember Lefty Tighty, Righty Loosey!

 

wouldnt you be able to leave the fan on the pulley? cant you just put a socket on the 3 bolts connecting the pulley to the pump? then thats just one less thing to do?!

 

Unfortunatley, no you can not... at least not on my Disco. All the three bolts do is hold the pully to the water pump. Inorder to get the water pump, you have to remove the fan.

For future reference, someone in another forum sent me a link that has has step by step guide to taking the fan off. As it turns out, "special tools" would have made the job MUCH easier.

so just to make sure i have this straight...to take off the fan youre cracking the bigass nut in between the fan itslef and the pulley and youre gonna turn it to the right to loosen it!? correct?!
cause thats what im gonna be doing this weekend! and dont want to be making it any harder than it needs to be hahaha

 

YES!!! If you look at the DIFFLOCK guide, your challenge is to figure out how to keep the pully from moving, while you are trying to loosen that big nut. Unless you spring for the special tool that DIFFLOCK makes, (which would make it SOOOO much easier) I was thinking that maybe a strap wrench around the pulley, once the belt is removed, might help you keep it from moving.
