Default What am I to expect from becoming a Range Rover owner?

So, I've been wanting a Range Rover now for quite some time, but I can really find a whole lot about them locally. I don't know of any enthusiasts groups here, and none of my buddy's have one.

So, I am mechanically inclined, capable of pulling/rebuilding engine, etc, and have done tons of work on vehicles. I don't mind wrenching or diagnosing problems.

Anyway, I was checking out a P38, preferably in the 00-02 range, but I know next to nothing about them. The dealers says "With the small 4.0, you can easily get 25 mpg with this thing!" But I believe it not at all. Also, I am not sure whether or not to stay with automatic or go manual (if offered). 4.0 or 4.6? I haven't found much in the way of google, so I am asking here.

Anyway, 15 mpg doesn't bother me, but 10 does. I need to tow 3500 lb trailer constantly, so I'd like to know recommended mods if needed to help keep it alive. Going fast isn't a concern, just as long as 0 to 60 isn't 20 seconds.

Thanks, and sorry if I posted in the wrong place.

I don't know much about Land Rovers in general and I'm by no means a qualified mechanic but I can tell you (in the case of my 04 Disco) they are quirky. I did a lot of reading on this forum about them and I knew that I would be getting into a situation where I would gain an intimate relationship with my Disco. In fact I am in the process of a head gasket job at the moment. Like I said, I don't have a ton of experience with automotive repairs but I'm learning a lot and it's worth it to me. That said, my Disco seems kind of like a woman, it takes a lot of work, time, patience and money to keep up with but it'll be worth all of it once I get her on the trails! Lol. The only real advice I can offer is to be patient and research everything you can on whatever year/model you decide to go with. Good luck, welcome to the forum and happy trails!
