Default 2008 LR2 coolant leak-hose or motor block leak?

Hello!

Please, I need your help to resolve a coolant leak in my 2008 LR2. We recently changed the radiator because it had a coolant leak from one of the corners, but now the leak is coming from another side. I also bought and replaced the larger hoses, but now the drops that fall on the floor are not coming from the other hoses that are visible and located at the front of the engine. They seem to be coming from the bottom of the engine block. I understand that this coolant leak should not be from any of the block’s gaskets, since the LR has never had an overheating issue. I was looking at the LR mechanic’s manual and saw that there are several hoses quite hidden at the back of the engine (I’ve attached a picture from the manual showing the hoses in green). Is it possible that if one of these rear hoses is leaking, the drop could run over the engine block and fall in the center of the engine, where I see it? Is there any other hidden hose, whether large or small, that could be causing this? I couldn’t find any pictures or diagrams in the manual that show how to locate these hoses that aren’t visible and also how to replace them. Could you please provide me with any information regarding this?

Thank you!

Good chance it's one of the hose fittings which had to be removed to replace the radiator. It can be hard to tell where the fluid's coming from since it gets blown all over. Might be something as easy as a fitting not seated, otherwise it might need a new oring or gasket.

I'd try jacking the car up and running it until it's hot. Remove the splash-guard, crawl under with a light and see if you can spot the leak. If not, turn the car off and then hang out underneath... the highest pressure in the cooling system actually occurs shortly after shutdown (the engine is still hot but the coolant flow has stopped).

Also my oil cooler failed shortly after my radiator, so look at that and also the transmission cooler on the other side. Both of those use engine coolant.

If you do the above, crawl under, make darn sure to wear safety glasses.

The coolant hoses on the 2008 deteriorate after a long time and they ALL need to be replaced. If they feel soft to the touch it's time for them to go.

Dont search. Feel the hoses. If they are soft, it's three simple steps:

1. Find a reputable shop.
2. Have them change ALL the coolant hoses.
3. Give them money.

Or… wait for the catastrophic hose failure and pending engine overheating??
Those rubber hoses are 16 y.o. would you run 16yo tires? And unlike tires, coolant hoses hit temperature extremes, which hasten the deterioration.

Cheers.

If it helps, I replaced ALL of the coolant and heater hoses shown in green (including the ones behind the engine), plus the radiator, coolant overflow bottle, water pump and thermostat on my 2008 LR2. While the ones behind the engine were challenging and took some time, it was all doable DIY.
