Default 2008 LR2 stuck in park

Been having issues with our Lr2 as of late with it not shifting out of park. I checked brake lights because I heard that, that could be the cause of it and sure enough we had the center one on the top of the hatch burn out. I currently replaced it with a gas station special bulb.......brake light now works but still getting the intermittent problem of shifting out of park. It seems whenever it becomes jammed all we have to do is give the lever a little smack forward, and then it's able to slide back and go into gear. Any suggestions what this may be?

There is a locking ring on the shift ****, under the leather. If this comes off, it can drop down the shaft, and prevent the shifter from fully engaging Park, which will bind it and can prevent you from moving the shifter.

Feel the leather down the shaft, and make sure there's nothing that feels loose at the bottom.
