It's only required when messing with the ECU, to try to avoid bricking it due to power failure. SDD complains if it doesn't detect it.

I'm thinking of getting a Mongoose cable (actually, a knockoff Mangoose cable). However, I'm not planning to reprogram anything so I'm not going to buy a power supply.

Is the SDD software structured well enough that I can use it for read-only measurements without accidentally navigating to reprogramming?

Yeah you can fool around with it to a degree, just put a regular battery charger on it. The software is going to complain or not give you options if your voltage is too low. BTW, if you have two vehicles just leave the other one one running with a jumper cable. But, if you are going to flash modules, get a 25amp battery SUPPLY.

The user interface sucks, so be vewy, vewy careful.
