Here's a tip for LR2 owners who like their engine compartment to look clean. Since most of what you see when you open the hood are plastic covers over almost everything, you want a cleaner that is strong enough to be effective but safe for plastic. After researching cleaners, I settled on Meguiar's Engine Cleaner. It's not as strong as the Gunk-style engine cleaners you see everywhere, but it's strong enough that it cleaned my covers with one application, doesn't damage plastic/rubber parts, and doesn't have an odor that knocks you over.

A 16oz spray bottle costs about $8 and will last for many cleanings. While Meguiar's brand products are carried by many auto parts stores, I could not find this Engine Cleaner spray locally. So I ordered a bottle from an online store.

I didn't even use a hose to wash it off. I purchased a stack of cotton shop towels to wipe it off on a cold engine. Whatever you use, don't use terry towels because they shed too much lint.

Now my engine compartment looks as good as the exterior

I wish I had taken "Before" photos with the covers on (I have one with the main cover off) but I did not even think about posting this topic until after I completed the cleaning work.

Attached are photos after my 25-minute cleaning job of the exposed surfaces. The plastic covers catch most of the dirt, so I did not clean the engine areas underneath them. This is a 2008 LR2 with 60K miles.

The photos don't show the real benefits of this cleaner ... easy spray and removal of dirt, and no odor that lingers with some cleaning products.
