I replaced my front turn signal bulbs today since one of them went out. My standard practice is to replace bulbs in pairs.
This bulb replacement is simple enough: Remove the two 10mm bolts at the top of the headlight assembly, pull up on the plastic release tab, and slide out the assembly so you can access the bulb socket.
Unfortunately, one of the plastic release tabs broke off when I pulled up on it, and then I noticed the plastic rod was also broken near the bottom. I don't think I applied too much force, it may have become brittle with age.
So I got my first opportunity to use a pair of specialty pliers I bought at Harbor Freight some time ago. It was one of those purchase decisions where you don't need it now, but when you do you'll be glad you have it. These 11" long pliers with a 90 degree bent nose was perfect for lifting up the plastic insert at the bottom. Going forward, I don't need to consider replacing the assembly as this is a simple workaround.
Just a tip the next time you're in HF looking for a tool, or when the Snap-On truck visits your house.
This is the rear view of the headlight assembly showing the plastic release tab and rod (I borrowed this photo from an eBay listing).
