Default LR2 2011 144k kms Rear diff and transmission filter

Hello Everyone,

Brand new to LR and very excited about the car. Its getting 10 years now and time to change fluids. Only have 2 questions now. Does a 2011 Lr2 hse has a limited slip rear diff? Original Castrol EPX is not Available im Canada. We have limited slip differential oil instead from castrol. Is it ok to use them?. Also do i need to change the transmission filter or just a fluid change?. Thanks in advance

Contact your closest dealer and ask them if they have p/n LR003156. That's the OEM recommended fluid. Castrol Axle EPX 80W-90 is most certainly available in Canada! Click here to order it online. There is no mention of the transmission fluid filter in the service manual. You don't need to change the transmission fluid unless it is off-color (should be red, not brown or black) or you drain a little into a tissue and there are any solids left on the tissue.

The car has a horrible history of rear diff failures, but they might have fixed it by 2011, not sure.

If you think your diff is prone to failure, best to run synthetic gear oil and change it often (I use amsoil severe gear in my 2008, and change it every 40k).

I have to verify it by comparing the pics but I think my LR2 at 167k so far had the differential replaced already with a new style unit, long before I bought it.

This thread has the pics of old and new style.

Mines replaced, but the replacement was the old style (it would have been weeks to get a new one). If it starts to whine, plan ahead and arrange to get the new design. I replaced mine at 90K, probably started to whine around 80K-ish.

50K on the replacement now, no issues, knock wood. When I dumped the dino oil to swap in the synth there were some metal shavings and significant metal chunks, but it looked more like machining debris than wear. I flushed it twice, been fine ever since.

Machining debris??? A clue, Sherlock! That might explain the failures in the first place! Disgruntled machining pissed off he didn't get his bonus, or his wife left him for a co-worker? LOL!
