LR2 Rear Differential
I was advised by a dealer there were potential pinion bearing issues on the differential and he suggested changing oil around 25K. I was trying to do this when I ran into the drain problem. I have since called his service writer about instructions. I will update again when I hear back.
According to the manual you have to change it at 100K, or 50K if you've done any spirited off-road driving.
Most people recommend doing it earlier. I bought mine at 40K and plan on changing it at 50K-ish when I get my next oil change.

If you have an 2008 LR2 with a warranty or have the opportunity to extend it you are in good shape. You WILL need it!
We have 34K on our 2008 LR2 and the rear diff started making a growling noise @ 28K. so we took it in, they replaced the pinion bearing.... 2 mos later the noise was returning slowely so I took back to dealer. They then replaced the Differential and not the pinion bearing this time..... now 3 months later they are replacing both the Pinion bearings and the differential and the viscious coupler as well..... they tell me the differential should never get changed without the pinion bearing repair too so when I asked why they did twice before I got the deer in the headlights stare....
If you start checking around you will find in other forums as well this is a very reoccuring problem. I have been told its everything from dirt accumulating in the bearing to its my tires feathering... no one really has an aswer or knows the cure. they just hope the fix holds until you get rid of the vehicle and then they will hit the next guy for parts.
Prices vary between dealers but I was quoted $3900 for the Differential $500 for the pinion bearings $2300 for the coupler..... and this was not anything the dealer took responsibility for even though the reoccuring failure took place some in warranty and some only 2 months out of warranty. LR North america did a goodfaith repair the 2nd time but I still got charged $400 and now its out again all under 34K!
Fluid changes will NOT prevent the failures. Rear ends should last longer than 28k and the fluid should last at least 50K. Based upon current failures I would estimate everyone will have a failure before 60K I am not the only one who has had reoccuring failures either.
I am now told there is a revised part available, but this was the same revision that was installed 2 mos ago.... the differential was a factory remaned one as well so who knows where the real problem is. in the repair, the parts , overall design or what.
So if you have an LR2 and its in warrenty have it checked.... if you are able to get an extended warranty do it, you will need it.

Cannonball – Have you thought about contacting an attorney who might be interested in getting a class action suit together? If this is as common as some say, it should be covered under an extended warranty for all owners on that part only. Car manufacturers often do that if a part is defective. There is ZERO excuse for rear diffs blowing out at such low mileage on newer vehicles.
I've also heard another theory that these issues have been caused by a static charge related to a software issue. Who knows. But at the end of the day, LR should be responsible – or forcefully held legally responsible – for this.

There is a filter that's part of the differential that has to be changed along with the oil (and yes there is a drain plug). If you off-road alot then it's recomended that you change the differential oil and filter every 20,000 miles.
