LR2 it cranks but will not start
I have land rover 2012 LR2 106,000 km. since 1 year ago after the warranty is expired I am starting having this problem which is some time when I start the car it cranks and make crank noise but would not start, after 8 to 10 trials It will start nor problem but some time it would not start at all after so many trials, but when it does not start I leave it for like around 10 minutes than I try again to crank it it will start normal without no problems this problems happen every 3 to 4 days.
in addition when I fill-up the gas tank to the top after I driving it couple of miles the engine shutoff but itself and will not start until after some cranking attempts or leave it off for 5 minutes and try again
I took to the dealer here in Abu Dhabi, UAE and he could not solve the problems and since they could find any problems :-(
Any suggestions? anyone had faced similar issue PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help
NOTE: The Battery is new and the starter kit is new as well as
even though Door locks, internal lights, stereo and Nav, all appear to be working normally, and when it doesn't start the drivers dash screen does not give me any error
Please waiting for your advice
Thanks and best Regards,

Here is what I recommend you do
First fill the fuel tank
Second keep it above half full
If the problem disappears you may have a broken transfer pump in the fuel tank (Note: if you are always above half full then you don't need the transfer pump)\
Also change the way that you are starting the vehicle
Do the following
* open door and enter vehicle
* dock the key (do not step on the brake)
* count to three
* press the start button (Hold it for 2 seconds, the Radio should turn on)
* count to three
* step on the brake and hold it down
* count to three
* press the start button
Let us know if this helps
Take care

Hi Paul
1) It does matter where the Gas level is 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 or full tank :-(
2) I have followed second advice but the Radio does not turn on -----> press the start button (Hold it for 2 seconds, the Radio should turn on)
Please still waiting for an advice

I just tried the following in my LR2
1. Unlocked the LR2
2. Entered the front passenger seat
3. Put key in slot
4 . Pressed the start button for 2 seconds
This will power the instrument cluster and the radio, it also will show P for parked on the instrument cluster
in this power mode if you move to the drivers side and press the brake you will be able to switch from park to neutral
the LR2 should be able to start in Park or Neutral
you will need to learn how to get into this Power Mode so that you can confirm that the failure to start is for Neutral as well as park
Thanks

I am having this same issue, the alternator recently went out on my 2008 LR2 and it started up a few times with a little hesitation and now will not start at all, good cranking no fire. I was getting a CEL for MAP sensor so I replaced it with original part and still just getting a solid full crank through with no fire. He said it could be some kind of security issue because I took off the front end to replace the sensor but it didn't crank when I last tried to start it before replacing the sensor. I am at a loss with winter around the corner I would love to have this baby up and running, it's been the best vehicle I have owned and now issues until now. I will try your method above and report back.
First do the power modes and confirm that you can get to mode I and II
Then do a hard reset (remove B+ lead and wait 30 minutes for system voltage to go to zero volts) then reconnect battery
Go to power mode II, then press the brake and press the start button
if it doesn't start the next thing to try is disconnect the MAF
Does it start with the MAF disconnected?
Good Luck

Thanks for the quick reply. I walked through your steps trying all of the above in order.
I was able to successfully get through Power Modes 0,I, II
I then disconnected the battery lead for 30 minutes and tried starting with the brake directly to Power Mode II, same result - crank no start.
Then I removed the MAF sensor and it sounded the exact same. In my process of elimination I also bought a MAF sensor on Ebay (not OEM) a couple of weeks prior so I tried starting it with that, then I put the original Denso MAF back on and it was the same result.
The starter sounds sounds solid, the battery is brand new I just swapped out because the warranty was almost up, and so is the alternator. Any other thoughts for this? Thanks again for the help, it has been tough to find resources for this so I am glad these forums are still active.
Thanks,
John
I am wondering if this is something related to fuel delivery, my tank is half full but I have not tried to fill the tank and see where it reads. However, for a year or so I would have intermittent occurrences where the gas gauge would drop to empty and show I had 0 miles to empty on range when it had gas. I am not sure if this would be a related issue of something going out but the vehicle had always started prior to this. A little back story, one day I put some Chevron Techron in the tank to do preventivel maintenance on the fuel system and a few days later my dash lit up like a Christmas tree with signals and died at a stop light, again not sure if its related but the timing was impeccable. So I had the alternator replaced at the shop, it drove for a few days and then it wouldn't start and I have been doing what I have mentioned on this thread up until now.
