Default LR2 Lower Splash Shield - cloth mat

I had to do a thorough cleaning of the belly cover (LR006779) after it got hit with grease from a leaking CV boot. There is a cloth mat attached to the inside of the metal cover with plastic trim snaps. The mat was saturated with grease which was slowly dripping wherever I parked, so I just ripped it off and discarded it. No more drips now.

Unfortunately, you can't buy this cloth mat separately from the metal cover which costs over $400. Not sure if I really need the cloth mat anyway. Does anyone know what it's for? I don't think it would be for noise on the undercarriage, but maybe thermal insulation?

Here's a stock photo showing the mat attached to the inside of the metal cover.

I think the mat serves as a heat shield, sound deadener and as an absorbent mat. I don't know if it has fire retardant qualities. Pretty sure you can replace it with a fire retardant sound deadening material. I believe members at www.freel2.com have done this.

Members on the freel2 forum have had similar problems with this mat, but they have not indicated any direct replacement. I should not have to cobble together a roll of thermal fabric that I cut-to-size when LR knows this is likely to need replacement over the life of the vehicle. Another disappointment.

I can understand the metal shield as a protective cover from road hazards. But I'm not convinced my LR2 is going to know the mat is missing.

Update: I just noticed this post which says that later models of the LR2 do not have the cloth mat attached to the lower shield. That's evidence that it may not be needed.

Check out this thread. I replaced mine with foil-lined foam as described. I like this better than OEM, which could trap leaking fluid and possibly be a fire hazard. It keeps things a little quieter, but probably not really critical.
